‘Mutha flood lines to be revised soon’

‘Mutha flood lines to be revised soon’

Pune: Khadakwasla Irrigation Division has nearly completed the work for the revision of blue and red flood lines. Pune Divisional Commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar recently said that the revision of blue and red lines of Mutha river is nearing completion. “The process is in the final stage and within a few months, it will be published,’’ he said.

While speaking to Sakal Times, environmental activist Sarang Yadwadkar said, “Khadakwasla Irrigation division has marked 60,000 cusecs as blue line of Mutha river. In the recent floods, Khadakwasla division released maximum 45,434 cusecs of water in Mutha river, but it crossed the blue line which is drawn as per the standard of 60,000 cusecs. It is an alarming situation. So, the changes should be made in blue line. Lines are drawn on paper but they do not exist physically. Now, we have to make changes considering the recent flood situation.”

The red and blue lines are artificial lines demarcating the river area on the flood line. The red line is decided on the maximum water level - which is possibly happens only once in 100 years, whereas blue line is demarcated as per maximum flood discharge in 25 years. The prohibitive zone is the area between the two blue lines on the either side of the river, while the restrictive zone is the area between the blue and red line.

Recently Mhaisekar said, “The updated list of red and blue zone of Pune will be released soon. The process of updating the takes place once in 25 years. It took place last in 1993 and new one will be published soon. We had started the work of updating the zones in 2013 and soon it will be finalised and will be available.”
