‘More awareness on PCOS needed’

Pune: Thin polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects about 50 per cent of all women suffering from infertility, said city doctors. They also share that there is a need for more awareness about PCOS and despite being underweight the woman might be suffering from PCOS.

PCOS is a condition that affects a woman’s hormone levels. It is a hormonal disorder which causes enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges. This hormone imbalance causes irregular menstrual cycles and may lead to infertility.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Karishma Dafle, an infertility specialist at Nova IVI Fertility Centre said that the younger women are more and more suffering from PCOS. “Many women in their fertility age that is between 16 years and 42 years of age are suffering from this. And almost one in 10 patients have PCOS who come to us. Among these patients, almost 50 per cent patients have thin PCOS. This means that the patient is not overweight. They are underweight or thin. And hence, they miss out of the symptoms of PCOS,” said Dafle.

She added that the popular misconception is that only women who have more weight face PCOS. “However, this is not true. Also, many women do not come forward because of social stigma. PCOS happens due to hormonal imbalance. Many women come to us after they are married and claim that there was no problem of irregular periods before marriage. However, this is not the case. Hence, there is more awareness needed,” said Dafle.

Echoing similar views, Dr Nameeta Mokashi-Bhalerao, fertility consultant, Nova IVI Fertility Centre, said that there is more awareness needed on thin or lean PCOS.

“The women should be careful if they have irregular periods. They must consult a doctor immediately as this may lead to infertility in the future. There are cheaper and effective treatments available for PCOS,” said Bhalerao. Highlighting that PCOS can also cause other problems, Dr Dafle said that if the hormones are imbalanced they may further lead to diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol issues.
