“Building a surface metro would cost around Rs 200 crore/km, the cost of elevated metro goes up to Rs 250 crore/km but when it comes to underground metro the cost touches Rs 1,000 crore/km." said Ramesh Rao.

PUNE: “At the speed of at least 30 km/hour travelling in Pune metro will be one of the wisest decisions people make when it comes to choosing public transport in the future,” said Technical Adviser of Mahametro Ramesh Rao.

He was present along with Technical Adviser Shashikant Limaye at Mahametro Samvaad in Anand Park area of Kothrud on Friday evening.

Speaking about the use of metro Rao said that for longer distance metro will consume less time to travel compared to other transport modes and so people will choose to travel by metro. As residents of Kothrud and Karvenagar had highlighted the point of running an underground metro instead of elevated or surface metro, Rao explained the cost factor of all three metro types to people and said the decision taken by the government to build 25 stations elevated and 5 stations underground was an ideal one.

“Building a surface metro would cost around Rs 200 crore/km, the cost of elevated metro goes up to Rs 250 crore/km but when it comes to underground metro the cost touches Rs 1,000 crore/km. If there is a rise in cost the burden will come on the fare of the metro and people have to pay higher price for the facility. During our entire planning exercise of building the metro we saw that minimum problem is caused to people while building the metro,” added Rao.

Shashikant Limaye said that for travel of more than 18 km journey people will have to pay a maximum of Rs 50 for their journey.
