Pune: Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar was in the city to attend the function on ‘Impact of the Inter-University Centres on Research and Training at Indian Universities and Higher Educational Institutions’ during the Shodha Shiksha Sameeksha.

It was organised by University Grants Commission (UGC) at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) on Sunday.
Javadekar said science and technology can change human life and hence we need more such centres.

“Inter-university centres and other such centres in the country are the platforms for innovation. Pure sciences should be taken as a lead on the global stage. There are 800 universities across the country and Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants the country to excel in science.  So we should take the country forward through such inter-universities,” said Javadekar.

“The most important way to take the country forward is through ‘innovation’ and it makes the impossible possible. Innovation will be the base of our education and we are laying emphasis on quality and outcome in school education and in higher education, we are emphasising on research. IUCAA has research and innovation opportunities for all the faculty and students. Now, we are also using technology to reach out to teachers and teaching them through Swayam. Around 11 lakh teachers who were not well-trained were given training and over 12 lakh teachers have applied for the training through Swayam,” said Javadekar.

VS Chauhan, Chairperson of the UGC said, “Inter-university centres are one of the best ideas and it is essential to have more such centres. So far there are seven such university centres across the country and young people come to these campuses. Also, we are engaging people from the private sector to collaborate with us and contribute to research.”
