Pimpri: Former corporator and social activist Maruti Bhapkar has accused the government of favouring the builder lobby on the issue of illegal constructions. Bhapkar said the ruling party is misleading citizens by taking such decisions.

Bhapkar said, “The government has issued a notification for the regularisation of unauthorised constructions in the city. Since it is not affordable and difficult due to the stringent terms and conditions, only 56 people have applied for regularisation in the past four months. Pimpri Chinchwad has 4,86,771 properties. Of these 3,13,855 are legal. So, a total of 1,76,488 constructions are illegal,” he said.

The civic body has imposed double property tax penalty on these illegal properties from 2012. It has recovered Rs 150.12 crore as the penalty in the past six years. Rs 485.23 crore dues are pending with owners of unauthorised properties. There are 32,774 unauthorised constructions having an area up to 600 sq ft. These will be exempted from paying a double tax penalty. There are 19,258 properties between 601 to 1,000 sq ft. They are liable to pay half the penalty.

There are 17,915 properties having an area of over 1,001 sq ft. These properties will have to pay the double tax penalty.

Bhapkar said, “Owners of properties constructed by builders will benefit by these rules. Individual house owners having over 1,000 sq feet area will have to pay more.

Therefore, the decision favours builders who have constructed illegal houses.”
