Pune: The Indian Army celebrated its Armed Forces Veterans Day on Sunday at Bombay Engineering Group and Centre, Kirkee, with a large number of retired armed forces personnel from Pune and adjoining areas attending the event.
Lt Gen Dewan Rabindranath Soni, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, while addressing the veterans, said that they should tell their grievances to the Army and should not post them on social media. He said, “Don’t take to social media, come to us with your grievances and we will make sure that they are addressed properly. It is my duty to help and it’s your duty to respect the armed forces, as you were, and still are a part of the Army. I will make sure that all promises made to you will be fulfilled, but you need to be patient, as it takes some time to get things done.”
Every year, January 14 is commemorated as Armed Forces Veterans Day as a mark of respect and recognition of the services rendered by Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBE, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, who retired from service on January 14, 1963.
On the occasion, a wreath laying ceremony was conducted at Bombay Engineering Group and Centre War Memorial, where wreaths were laid by Lieutenant General Soni, Vishist Seva Medal, ADC, and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, along with seniormost veterans from the three services, settled in Pune. Officers from the civil administration from Pune, which included Agriculture and Banking department were also present on the occasion.
During the rally, stalls were also set up by the Army to spread information and extend help in case of job placements, pension and grievance redressal. A medical camp was also organised, where a large number of medical specialists and medical facilities were made available to the veterans. Lunch was also served for all the veterans at the venue after the event.
The event also felicitated Veer Naris and disabled veterans, as the year is also observed as the year of the ‘Disabled Soldiers’.
