PUNE: While expressing regret over the demolition of Lenin’s statue, Sunil Deodhar, in-charge of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Tripura unit and architect of the party’s victory in Tripura polls, stated, “We do not believe in installation of statues.” Deodhar, who is also BJP ‘s national executive committee member, refused to comment on whether the statue of Lenin will be reinstalled in Tripura. He was speaking during a media interaction at Patrakar Sangh on Monday.
He added, “It was a very disappointing thing that Lenin’s statue was demolished. However, we should also remember the act of Communist Party in Tripura in 1978. They had issued a government circular to remove Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru’s photos from all government offices and they had dumped all these pictures in one room. The act of demolition of the statue is insane and people who did it are all criminals. Criminals do not belong to any party.”
“After BJP’s victory in Tripura, some attacks were reported on Communist Party workers. These attacks were not on a large scale. During Communist Party’s regime, 1,000 BJP workers were murdered,” he pointed out and added, “We don’t believe in politics of intolerance”. He added, “We will accept Communist Party workers in our party after six months, that too, only after checking their criminal records”.
Sharing how BJP ensured a landslide win in Tripura, he said, “The party gave a thrust on micromanagement to defeat 20 years of the Communist regime in Tripura.” Deodhar added that party President Amit Shah had given him the responsibility to make Tripura communist free. He said, “Poverty, chit fund scam, the incompetence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity are some of the reasons, which helped BJP to defeat the Communist Party government.”
Deodhar further said, “We will emphasise on developing infrastructure in Tripura. We will start new factories and will provide employment to 10 lakh youths. We will also develop tourism in this state.”
