‘Beggar-free Pune’ drive from today

Police Commissioner Venkatesham told Sakal Times, “Senior Police Inspector Milind Gaikwad of Kondhwa police station has taken major action in this regard. Taking a cue from that we are conducting the drive all over the city. There are several schemes of the State government about beggars. We are taking help of other departments also.”

Pune: In order to make Pune city beggar free, dedicated cells have been set up in every police station under the Pune city police. On the directions of Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham, a month-long drive will be launched from Thursday by the police stations with active assistance from traffic branch units. 

Police officials said that detailed guidelines and standard operating procedure (SOP) have been issued to every police station. “The traffic policemen have been asked to inform their control room who will inform the main control room about the presence of beggars at any chowk, road. Accordingly, the main control room will inform the concerned local police station who will send staff to detain the beggars. The minors will be sent to observation homes while major ones will be sent to shelter home and beggar reception centre in Fulenagar,” an officer said. 

The police stations have also been instructed to register FIRs and arrest those who run beggar racket. “The plainclothes cops will keep a watch especially on children as to who collects their money,” the officer added.

When contacted, PI Gaikwad said, “We have taken action against 110 beggars this year till now.” Asked about any racket, he added, “27 of the beggars had paid Rs 5,000 cash surety each and had hired famous lawyers, so it does speak about something. But a thorough enquiry is to be done in the case.”
