Pooja Sakat’s body was discovered in a well near a rehabilitation site for the Koregaon-Bhima riot victims on Sunday. She was a victim and witness in the riots case.

PUNE: Members of various organisations and the Republican Party of India (RPI) staged a protest outside the District Collector’s office on Tuesday demanding strong action against the accused involved in the alleged suicide case of 17-year-old Pooja Sakat, who was a victim and a witness in the Koregaon-Bhima riots case of January 1.

Sakat’s body was found floating in a well near a rehabilitation site for the riot victims on Sunday. Sakat’s house was set on fire and she was demanding rehabilitation from the government. Members of RPI demanded that Sakat’s family be rehabilitated immediately and be given five acres of land by the government.

The protesters also said that the case of Sakat’s death can be a murder case and the police should also investigate that angle. The Shikrapur police have arrested two persons and booked seven others in the suicide case. The accused were arrested for harassing Pooja.

The violence at Koregaon-Bhima broke out on January 1 when a large number of people had gathered at the Koregaon-Bhima victory tower to commemorate the 200th year of the British-Peshwa battle at the place on January 1, 1818. In the violence, Sanaswadi resident Rahul Fatangale was killed in stone pelting, while about 100 vehicles were torched and about 60 houses and commercial establishments were set ablaze.
