Rains likely to increase in State till September 24

Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a cyclone alert for south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts for September 22. Rainfall activity in Maharashtra may also increase till September 24. 
  
As per the IMD, a depression formed over east-central on Wednesday night moving nearly west-northwestwards, it intensified into a deep depression and lay centred on Thursday morning over west-central Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm till September 21 morning.

It is very likely to move west-northwestwards around Thursday midnight as a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 60 to 70 km per hour.

The IMD has forecast a minor damage to power and communication lines due to breaking of branches and damage to roads. Some damage to paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards is also forecast. Sea water inundation in some areas after erosion of kutcha embankments is also predicted.

The IMD has asked the authorities for total suspension of fishing operations, fishermen are advised not to venture into northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha, West Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh coasts till September 22. 
 
The southwest monsoon has been active over gangetic West Bengal and Odisha. It has been subdued over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Marathwada, Vidarbha and coastal and south interior Karnataka.

Across the country, heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places likely over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on September 24. Heavy rain at isolated places likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, east Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu during the same time.

Maharashtra and Pune city
The IMD has predicted rainfall in central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan and Goa and Vidarbha till September 24. Pune city may also experience one or two spells of rainfall in the city till September 26 with maximum temperature in the city to touch 29 degree Celsius.

Rains in city
On Thursday, Pune experienced rains after weeks of hot days. According to the IMD, the city recorded 11 mm of rainfall on Thursday. The day temperature was 32.1 degrees Celsius.
