The sensational late-night arrest of Iqbal Kaskar, the brother of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, has only reestablished how Dawood gang, known in the underworld as ‘D company’, is actually very active with their criminal operations in Mumbai and its suburbs. Though Dawood himself is still in hiding in a foreign country, his relatives are still running the operations in the cash rich parts of India using his name to scare their victims from whom they extort money or other benefits.
About 25 years ago, ‘D company’ concentrated mainly on their targets in Mumbai and its suburbs but now this gang has spread its operations to other areas like Thane city. Thane is brimming with real estate sector activity since the last few years and after Kaskar’s arrest, Thane Commissioner Parambir Singh described how extortion from real estate developers was done by Iqbal Kaskar and members of D company.
One shocking thing which was revealed in the press conference held by the commissioner of police was that they have found links of some local politicians in this extortion racket that Iqbal Kaskar ran sitting in south Mumbai. This means some junior level politicians in cities like Mumbai and Thane may be involved in helping D company in their criminal operations, this is nothing less than an anti-national activity or sedition. If builders are being threatened by Dawood gang and some local politicians are acting in connivance with gang members, it means some of our politicians are helping India’s enemy number one.
A few years ago, when the United States special forces struck Abbotabad in Pakistan to strike against Osama Bin Laden and President Barak Obama announced to the world that leader of the terror group responsible for the 9/11 attack in New York was killed, some Indians asked the question why India cannot do a similar operation against our enemy number one Dawood Ibrahim.
The reply lies in what was exposed in Monday’s operation by the Thane police. It shows that Dawood is still running his criminal operations in Mumbai and its suburbs and still is being helped by some politicians and perhaps others like some (not all) members of the police force or bureaucracy too. If India has not been able to shut down and evict D company’s operations in our own Mumbai, how will we strike against him on some foreign land?
The other aspect is how some of our own people indulge in what can be described as treason. Just as Ibrahim Kaskar was arrested from his (and Dawood’s) sister Hasina Parkar’s residence at Nagpada in south Mumbai (from where he was running his extortion operations), we have an upcoming Bollywood movie based on Hasina Parkar’s life which is being promoted on national television and the promos indicate that the movie glorifies Hasina Parkar.
When it is getting established time and again that Dawood’s brother and other family members are running criminal operations of D company, how can his sister be portrayed as an innocent social worker in a Hindi movie?
On one hand, the government of India has officially announced that Dawood is India’s biggest wanted fugitive and on the other members of his family who are known to be involved in anti-national activities are being supported by either small time political activists or by members of Bollywood industry.
These two things cannot coexist in the same country. The United States was univocal in its stand against Osama bin Laden and in pursuing military action against Osama, India too must follow that example.
