Need to retain talents by developing Goa into IT hub: Parrikar

PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said that there was need to retain tailents by developing the state into an IT hub with a positive mindframe.

Speaking a panel discussion at Goa IT Day celebration at Inox in the city, he said, "If Goa can excel in so many other fields, we can do so in IT as well. We're a small state that has produced talents beyond its strength. We should aim to retain the talents by developing Goa into an IT hub with a positive mindframe.'' The Chief Minister said right from the year 2000, he had been dreaming of Goa becoming a power hub for IT and with cyberage scheme, Goa did become the first state give technical grants and laptops to students.

The Chief Minister said it was his government which started distributing laptops to students for almost free though now Now giving computers and laptops to students in the higher secondary and colleges has become a part of political agenda for everyone.

''I went through a scheme called as cyber age. Now giving computers and laptops to students in the higher secondary and colleges has become a part of political agenda for everyone. But when there was no one to think about it, Goa was the first state when laptops were given to students for nominal price of Rs. 500. It was like showering them with an IT logic,'' he said.

Mr Parrikar when said when Goans could excel in other fields then why could not they do well in the field of IT.

''Goa has a capacity. Though it is small, we have a diaspora which is probably one or two crore. This is a very surprising fihure as compared to other states, when the state has only a 15 lakh population. There are about a crore and ahalf Goans around India and one or two lakh around globe and the potential of developing high cutting edge technology is very good, because we have excelled in science, music, art. Why not IT,'' he said.
