Monsoon moves to southern part of Karnataka

Monsoon moves to southern part of Karnataka

Pune: The Southwest Monsoon, at last, moved to the southern part of Karnataka on Friday after lingering for long in Kerala.

The monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 8. Later, its movement was halted owing to the strengthening of Cyclone Vayu in the Arabian Sea. On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) reached up to Mangalore, Mysore, Salem, Cuddalore, Agartala, Lumding and Passighat.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather Department at IMD Pune, said the conditions are becoming favourable for the further advancement of the monsoon.

“But there is a lack of moisture due to ‘Vayu’ in the southern peninsula. The cyclonic storm dragged the moisture from this area. So, there is no rain there. Hence, the further advancement of monsoon is going to take a few more days,” Kashyapi further added.

“By June 20 the monsoon will gain back its strength,” Kashyapi said.

“We are expecting good progress of the monsoon after June 21. By June 27, entire Maharashtra will be covered by the Southwest Monsoon,” said Kashyapi.

Cyclone Vayu
As per the IMD, the very severe cyclonic storm Vayu is skirting near Porbandar.

The system is very likely to move westwards and recurve north-eastwards thereafter.

There has been an orange alert in the areas as the intensity of the storm is expected to reduce by June 15.

IMD has predicted gale wind at the speed of 120 to 130 kmph to 145 kmph over the north Arabian Sea on June 15. Squally wind at the speed of 45 to 55 kmph to 65 kmph over Gujarat coast during the same time.

Talking about the system, Kashyapi said that on June 15, very severe cyclonic storm Vayu will reduce its intensity to severe cyclonic storm.

“By June 16, the intensity will be further reduced. By June 16 afternoon, the wind speed will be 70 to 80 kmph with a maximum speed of 100 kmph,” said Kashyapi.
