New Delhi: Launching a scathing attack on the NDA Government at the Centre for its 'misgovernance' over the last four years and its 'failure' to fulfill promises made to people during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress on Saturday said that the 'jodi' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah is harmful for the country.
Addressing a joint press conference with senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, AICC media in-charge Randeep Surjewala and All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev, AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot said during the last four years, the Modi government had betrayed the faith that various sections of society had put in Narendra Modi and the BJP by giving them a huge majority in the Lok Sabha.
"The BJP led Government at the Centre has betrayed the faith that the people vested in the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Every section of society, be it the youth, women, farmers, Dalits, tribals, traders, as well as the minorities, feel a sense of betrayal. For, over the past four years, the Modi Government has failed to fulfil the promises that it has made to people in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections be it on providing 2 crore jobs to the youth. 150 per cent MSP to farmers, bringing back Black money, ensuring security for women in the country and removing corruption.,'' Gehlot said.
Gehlot added that the Congress was observing the fourth anniversary of this government as 'Vishwasghat diwas' to highlight the Government's betrayal of the faith of people.
"As part of the 'vishwasghat diwas' (betratal day), the Congress leaders across the country will hold press conferences and organise dharnas and protest highlighting the failures of this government. On this occasion, we are also releasing a booklet 'India Betrayed in four years of BJP misrule'. The booklet highlights the failure of this government in all areas through figures", Gehlot said.
Speaking on the occasion, Ghulam Nabi Azad lambasted the Modi Government on the issue of national security, assault on freedom of expression , the destruction of the economy, fall in exports , a sharp increase in cross-border attacks from Pakistan and the various corruption scams during the Modi regime including the Vyapam scam, the alleged irregularities in the deal for Rafale fighter jets, the PNB scam, the PDS scam and the SSC exam leak scam.
Pointing out that Modi had sought votes during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on the issue of National security, Azad said, "National security is an area on which Modi focused a lot during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He exploited National security issue to the hilt during the Lok Sabha polls and got a lot of votes in the elections on the issue.
However, the National security situation in the country today has worsened since this government came to power at the Centre. Ever since this government came to power at the Centre, there has been deterioration in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. In the recent history of the valley, ever since the situation there normalised in 1996, the highest number of army men and security forces have been killed during the four years of the NDA Government. During this period, the highest number of civilians have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir. Also never before in the history of the country have so many defence establishments been attacked, from the Pathankot air base to the Pampore attack."
