New Delhi: A special CBI court in Delhi on Wednesday granted former Finance minister P Chidambaram interim protection from arrest in the Aircel-Maxis case after he moved an anticipatory bail plea.

Chidambaram has been granted interim protection till June 5, when the court will hear the matter.

The court also directed the ED not to take any coercive action against Chidambaram in the matter till then.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are probing the Aircel-Maxis case of alleged money laundering.

The CBI had arrested P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram in connection with the case in February this year.

The matter pertains to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by Mr Chidambaram when he was the Union Finance Minister in the Manmohan Singh government.

The probe agencies have claimed that an alleged payment of Rs 26 lakh was made by Aircel Televentures Limited to ASCPL within days of the FIPB approval. The ASCPL is allegedly linked to Karti Chidambaram.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued for Chidambaram during his anticipatory bail plea hearing.
