Pune: For the past 15 days, the protest for Maratha reservation had hampered the transport in the State, including the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses. The buses were easily targeted by the protestors and 12 were torched during the agitation in Chakan. Due to this, Pune division of the MSRTC lost Rs 5.5 crore and Rs 30 crore was lost across the state. Now, the MSRTC has decided to use windshield armour to protect all buses including ordinary and semi- luxury buses.

During the Maratha agitation from July 20 to 29, 353 ST buses were damaged, mostly in Solapur district.

“It has been observed that ST buses were easily targeted by the protesters and they pelt stones at the windshields of the buses. Each windshield glass costs Rs 5,000 to 10,000. The drivers are forced to halt the buses and deboard. It affects revenue loss of the department. It has been decided by the transport department to install armour on all buses which will save the glass as well loss of revenue,” said an official of the MSRTC from the Pune divisional controller’s office.

“We have started to install the windshield armour on some buses in Pune division. Presently, the number is low, but it will increase. The buses in Baramati and Indapur have already installed the armour and more are yet to come. These will be installed only in ordinary buses,” said Yamini Joshi, Pune Division Controller.
