State forms panel to boost edu institutes’ rankings

Pune: To enhance the ranking of universities and colleges in the state, higher and technical education department of Maharashtra government has established a committee which will select around 13 universities and 100 colleges for this pilot project.
The six-member committee is being headed by Vice Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Nitin Karmalkar with member secretary of the committee, Assistant Director of RUSA, Maharashtra and members Ravindrasinh Pardeshi, Principal of Fergusson College, Dhanraj Mane, Director of Higher Education, VC of Mumbai University and Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
Karnataka has appointed a rating agency to upgrade the quality of education in higher education, similarly, the Maharashtra government is considering to deploy one for the state. It has directed the committee to select a rating agency which will further work towards guiding educational institutions for improving its ranking. The rating agency is yet to be identified.The decision of setting a committee was taken in last meeting of vice-chancellors from different universities in the state held in April.
The State government had directed that the committee should review the performance of every educational institution, and considering this, the committee should mull upon improvement of quality in higher education and educational institutions.
Basically, this committee has been set to review the present status of the higher educational institutes in the state and select some professional institutes to overcome their challenges and improve their rankings.
“Our efforts will be towards improving the quality of education in higher educational institutes, mentoring them to upgrade in higher ranks and bring their presence in global scenario. Certain criterias like NAAC grades will be considered to review their performance,” said Pardeshi.
“The committee has not yet conducted its first meeting after it was formed. Therefore, following developments like appointing a rating agency will be done after the meeting is held. It will be ensured that whichever agency is deployed will follow the rules formed by the committee,” he added.
