Pune: Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale on Sunday said that a memorial for the Battle of Bhima-Koregaon should be made to honour the sacrifice of Mahar and Dalit communities. He was speaking during a press interaction on Sunday in
“The spirit with which the soldiers fought and the cause to fight against atrocities should be highlighted through the memorial. I have planned to speak to the prime minister as well as the chief minister regarding the same,” said Athawale.
During the interaction, he expressed grief about the Kamala Mills incident in Mumbai. “The authorities should help the families of the victims financially. Such permissions for restaurants should be avoided which can cause such huge loss of life. The BMC and the government should take serious action and an investigation should commence as soon as possible,” said Athawale.
Talking about the controversial statement by Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde, Athawale said no one can change the Constitution, it can be only amended.
“Amendments make the constitution stronger. For example, the word 'secular' was added later in the preamble. I and my party are here to safeguard the rights of Dalits and such statements should not be made,” said Athawale.
He said his party is all set to support BJP in the coming 2019 elections.
During the interaction, he noted that he is trying to get scholarships for students to be paid twice a year which would make education easier for them.
