Pune: A group of social and political organisations, which has come together under the banner of ‘Sanvidhan Sanrakshan Samiti’, on Tuesday announced they would be holding a protest at Member of Parliament Anil Shirole’s office, demanding the arrest of Milind Ekbote and Sambhaji Bhide.

Ekbote and Bhide are the prime accused in the Koregaon-Bhima attack case as they allegedly instigated the riots. The attack took place when thousands of people had gathered to commemorate the 200 years of the battle between the Mahar soldiers of the British army and the Peshwa army. The visitors, who were travelling towards Koregaon-Bhima and the ones who were at the victory pillar, were attacked. This triggered protests from the Dalit groups demanding action against the elements behind the attacks.

Addressing a press conference in the city, representatives of these organisations said it was appalling that even after a month of the incident, the accused remain out of custody. “The police do not make any delay when arresting a common man. But even after serious accusations and offences registered against Bhide and Ekbote, they are yet to be arrested,” said Sanjay Bhimale, a representative of Sanvidhan Sanrakshan Samiti.

The groups are accusing the police and the government of partial treatment and of shielding Bhide and Ekbote from being prosecuted. The group has accused MP Anil Shirole of silence on the issue and his failure to address it in Parliament or before the media. The groups will protest on February 9 at 11 am at Shirole’s office.
