'Milk Blockade' andolan turns violent

The ongoing 'Milk Blockade' andolan turned violent on the third day on Wednesday, as Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana (SSS) workers set afire an empty milk tanker of 'Gokul Dudh' at Umalwad phata on Kolhapur-Sangli national highway, early on Wednesday morning.

The andolan is for getting a subsidy of Rs five per litre on milk. 

At Umalwad phata on Kolhapur-Sangli bypass highway, some unidentified agitators stopped an empty milk tanker and set it on fire, causing a vehicular traffic jam for over two hours. However, the agitators managed to flee before the police were able to reach the spot. 

In another incident, at Jaysingpur town of Kolhapur district, SSS workers broke a milk tanker near BSNL office on Kolhapur-Sangli highway early Wednesday morning and threw 1200 litre milk on road. 

A similar scene was witnessed at Bidree village in Karveer tehsil, as agitators stopped a milk tempo and poured out about 1,000 litre milk from 34 cans and allegedly thrashed a tempo driver identified as Gajraj Patil, police added.
