Maharashtra Govt fixes fares of private buses for benefit of passengers

Mumbai: Maharashtra Transport Minister Diwakar Raote on Saturday said that government has decided to fix fares of private and contractual buses to stop the loot of passengers during the holiday season. A decision in this regard was taken by the government on Friday.

As a result, the private bus operators can charge a maximum of one-and-a-half times fare as compared to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus fares during the holiday and summer period, he said.

Those who are found to be overcharging the passengers, action would be taken against them by cancelling their transport licenses, the minister said.

As a number of passengers in the state travel by private buses and other modes of transport during the peak period, the private bus operators fleece them by increasing the fares, he said and pointed that therefore, these fares have been fixed as per the order of the high court.

This decision will help prevent the loot of the passengers by the private transporters during the peak season, Mr Raote added.
