Pune: Holding a press conference in the city on Tuesday, a relative of the sole Koregaon-Bhima victim Rahul Phatangade held the State government responsible for the riots and said that he will go on a hunger strike against Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi if the accused in Phatangade’s death are not prosecuted soon.
“My cousin Rahul lost his life for no fault of his own in the riots that happened in Koregaon-Bhima. He left the house to buy a replacement for a damaged tap in the home, but lost his life as a stone hit him when he was riding his bike,” Tejas Dhawde, maternal brother of Phatangade, said, adding, “I do not want to target any community. I want the culprits behind the attacks to be punished.”
Dhawde said he holds the State government responsible for the incident. “The government has a huge machinery in its control. There were early reports that there is a possibility of violence at the event. Yet, the government failed to prevent the violence. Even during the violence, the police did nothing but watch as the violence spread. I hold the chief minister responsible for the riots.
I have faxed my demands to the chief minister and will also meet him. If he fails to deliver on those demands, I will build a state-wide movement against the government, taking along the Maratha and the OBC communities as well. The government should arrest the masterminds behind the riots at the earliest. If he’s incapable to deliver, the CM should resign,” Dhawde said.
