Gujarat not to divert water for P-T-N proj

MUMBAI: The Gujarat government on Friday clearly said no to diverting 434 Metric Cubic Meter (MCM) water to Maharashtra. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had requested Gujarat government to release the water from the Tapi basin as part of the Par-Tapi-Narmada (P-T-N) inter-state river link project.

After the denial from the Gujarat Government, the issue will now be discussed in the next meeting of irrigation ministers of five states on June 18. The meeting will happen in Mumbai with the irrigation ministers from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Goa with Arjun Ram Meghawal, union minister of state for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

According to the agenda of the meeting, there will be finalisation of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed among the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Central government regarding inter-state river links Par-Tapi-Narmada and Damanganga-Pinjal as the first subject concerned for Maharashtra.

Fadnavis in a letter dated July 20, 2017, had requested Gujarat to divert 434 MCM of water to P-T-N link from upstream of Ukai dam, one of the largest reservoirs in Gujarat across Tapi river.

The meeting’s agenda stated that a meeting was taken by Secretary of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation on April 20, 2018 with the officials of both the states regarding water sharing in respect of Damanganga-Pinjal and P-T-N link projects.

“During the meeting, the Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat, stated that the inflows into the Ukai reservoir have reduced over the years and the Government of Gujarat may not be in a position to accept Maharashtra’s demand to divert 434 MCM of water in Tapi basin from upstream of Ukai reservoir,” stated the agenda.

“The issue of diverting 434 MCM of water shall be deliberated and resolved,” it further stated.
