The special leave is in addition to the existing 180-days maternity leave to women

Mumbai: Finally the State government has issued a special parenting paid leave of 180-days for government employees. This leave is applicable to female employees who are mothers. A male employee can also avail this leave if he is a single parent or his wife is bedridden.

State Cabinet, on July 5, approved a proposal to grant a special 180-days paid leave for working women for better parenting. If the wife is not alive, male employees responsible for parenting children below 18 years can avail this leave. The government has made an amendment in the proposal that if the female parent is not well or bedridden, then the male parent can avail this special parenting leave.

The special leave is in addition to the existing 180-days maternity leave to women. This decision will benefit about four lakh women employees out of the 18 lakh working with the State government.

The paid leave is valid until the child turns 18 years of age. These leaves can be availed during the examination of the children for successive years but during one year, such leaves can be taken thrice.
