Denied promotion, cop shoots himself dead

Pune: A 49-year-old police inspector allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself dead using a revolver at his residence in Sangli on Thursday morning.

A suicide note recovered from his pocket states that he was depressed after being denied promotion.

The deceased was identified as Sakhahari Girjappa Gadade, who was posted with the State CID unit in Sangli.

The incident took place at 6.30 am in his flat at Deval Complex opposite the Sangli Police headquarters in Vishrambag area of Sangli city. His wife and two children were asleep when Gadade shot himself.

Additional SP (Sangli) Shashikant Borate said, “Preliminary investigation suggests that he shot himself with a licensed revolver. We have recovered a suicide note but I cannot divulge its contents.”

The body was sent to Miraj Hospital for post-mortem and later handed over to the family, said police.

According to sources, Gadade earlier served with Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Police Training School, Tasgaon. His batch mates have been promoted but he was left out. Many of his juniors have also been promoted, his friends said.

His family members had no inclination that he will take such an extreme step. “He had gone for Diwali shopping on Wednesday. His father, whose 84th birthday the family cerebrated recently, is retired from police service. His elder brother is serving with the state police,” an officer said.
