Cops warned against malicious CDR mails

Pune: The Maharashtra Police have warned officers about Malware attack through malicious email under the garb of providing online ‘call details record’ (CDR) services.

Officials said that the hackers tried to connect department computers with servers located out of India. Officers have been asked to use gov.in domain email for official correspondence.

Additional Director General of Police (Equipments & Provisions) Hemant Nagrale from the Maharashtra police headquarters, Mumbai, has written in this regard to police units in the State.

“The malicious email gives the link to download software for online CDR, that helps connect the computer with servers located in foreign countries. Therefore, use only secure gov.in domain email id for official purposes. If you are using personal email id, make it is securely encrypted. Install anti-virus in computers,” Nagrale stated in his letter.  Police officials said that there is standard procedure to obtain CDR, which is delayed some time.

Therefore, some officers may fall prey to such links giving them online CDR, which is non-existent.

The Pune police commissionerate has a technical analysis wing (TAW) under the crime branch, whose function is to provide support to investigators by tracing locations of phones. It also has the master data of all persons using phones in Pune.

“Nowadays, CDR has become a very important tool in solving cases. Therefore, some anti-social elements may lure officers with CDR bait to gain access to computers which have sensitive data related to various cases. If hackers steal those data, they can misuse them besides using them to blackmail,” an officer told Sakal Times.
