3,000 students get a chance to take part in PG admissions

Pune/Mumbai: Over 3,000 candidates have got one last chance to participate in the postgraduate (PG) medical and dental admissions’ process, as the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) cell freshly released the revised merit list on Tuesday evening.

The revised merit list has been generated for personal counselling round, which will be conducted according to the new merit list, as directed by the Supreme Court.

After hundreds of candidates had protested over confusion in the admission process during personal counselling round at JJ Hospital in Mumbai on Sunday, the SC had ordered the State CET cell to generate the revised merit list. The apex court then passed a ruling directing the State CET cell to revise the rounds conducted on June 9 and June 10.

The revised merit list updated on June 12 evening consists of 3,251 names of candidate students for PG MD/MS/DIP at the government and private aided medical colleges across the State. The personal counselling session will be now followed according to this new list.  As per the list update till June 11, a total of 330 seats were vacant in the medical colleges, while around 26 seats were vacant in the dental colleges across the State.

“Already 1,700 seats have been occupied by these candidates,” said Director of Medical Education and Research Dr Tatyarao Lahane.

“We have generated the merit list of all names so that the candidates get a chance to take admissions in the newly released vacant seats. In case, if any candidate wants to upgrade into a different stream, they can do so in this round,” added Lahane.

“Whether we release one seat or 100 seats, all students get an opportunity to compete for it. The admissions will be based on merit,” he added.

The CET cell has informed that these seats have an inclusion of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category seats, which have now been converted into general category seats after the SC had cancelled admissions under EWS category. The commission has also informed that the revised merit list has been prepared for personal counselling and includes all general category candidates, along with those who had previously opted for EWS category. The list includes the names of all candidates, who have joined, not joined, cancelled or filled status retention form.

“During the counselling process, if a candidate, who is already admitted in the previous round, is upgraded, his/her previous seat will be immediately made available in the counselling round to the subsequent candidates. If a candidate gets a seat, he/she will have to immediately confirm admission at the selected seat,” said Anand Rayate, Commissioner and the competent authority of State CET Cell, Mumbai.

Another important thing in the notice is that all candidates will be required to provide their original documents during the current counselling session, to be eligible for it.

Officials informed that all the admissions will be completed by June 17, as per the court’s order.
