Speaking to Sakal Times, Gaikwad said if the mills had paid the FRP in advance, sugarcane farmers would not have protested. “We will continue our action and have already started seizure of sugar from some mills in Kolhapur,” added Gaikwad.

PUNE: Sugar Commissioner Shekar Gaikwad on Monday said that most of the mills, which had defaulted on the fair and remunerative prices (FRP) payment, have started to clear their payments, except a few from Kolhapur.

A delegation of few mill owners, on Monday requested the sugar commissioner to go slow on the action taken by him. He had earlier issued Revenue Recovery Certificates (RCC) against defaulting mills.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Gaikwad said if the mills had paid the FRP in advance, sugarcane farmers would not have protested. “We will continue our action and have already started seizure of sugar from some mills in Kolhapur,” added Gaikwad.

According to the sugar commissioner, till January 31, the mills were to pay a total of Rs 13,305.62 crore. They have paid Rs 8,464.47 crore, bringing down the FRP dues from Rs 5300 crore on January 15, 2019, to Rs 4,841.15 crore on January 31 this year.

As per the data provided by the Sugar Commissionerate, more than Rs 3,200 crore was settled by sugar mills in the last two weeks.

After the protest led by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana (SSS) Chief Raju Shetti, the Sugar Commissionerate had issued RRC orders against 39 sugar mills of the State for failing to pay FRP to sugarcane cultivators.

Gaikwad said over 100 notices were issued by the commissionerate to the mills. However, sugarcane cultivators said they will continue the protest until all the dues are cleared. The sugarcane cultivators are firm on FRP payment which is as per the law, while some mills are insisting on part payment of FRP leading to chaos between sugarcane cultivators and the mills.
