Mumbai: Chief Secretary Sumeet Malik issued a diktat to all the secretaries of government departments to not skip or remain absent for the budget session, or they will have to face consequences.

The budget session of the legislative assembly will begin from February 26. This may be the last budget session of the government, as there may be assembly elections next year.

It is mandatory for all government officials to be present at the assembly session, but it was found that many secretaries remain absent from the session and send their juniors for briefings regarding the issues related to their department. When an issue is going to be discussed in the house, the secretary of the concerned department should be present in the gallery to provide additional information to the ministers. Many members of the house pointed it out several times, but still, the secretaries skipped the discussion, giving reasons of other important work.
The chief secretary clearly stated in a circular that any issue can be raised in the house at any time, and so, the secretary has to be present.

There could be a discussion on any issue, and during such a situation, the minister could have to reply to additional questions raised by the members of the house. To provide accurate information regarding, the secretary should be there.

If the secretaries don’t follow the instructions, they will face action from the government, the chief secretary warned.
