The Development Plan Pune is under process and will include the newly merged 11 villages.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government decided to fix the responsibility of implementation of the proposed Development Plan (DP) of megacities. There will be a time-bound programme for all civic bodies to implement it.

The Urban Development Department (UDD) recently approved the DP of Mumbai, ensuring more affordable housing and more open spaces under the reservations. The DP of Pune is under process and will include the newly merged 11 villages.

In the past, it was observed that implementation of the DP is poor. The DP of Mumbai was prepared in 1991. The rate of implementation was poor and about 17 per cent.

“Every twenty years the civic body prepares the DP for proper and planned development to avoid congestion and provide better infrastructure for the citizens. Due to poor implementation, there is a haphazard development of towns putting extra pressure on the system,” said an official from the UDD.

Provision of sufficient funds will be made in the budget. Each civic body will be given a target to achieve in a specified time. It will speed up the projects and they will be completed in scheduled time.

“At the same time, there are technical problems like land acquisition. Due to lack of funds the civic body could not acquire the land for public utility, hence the projects were delayed. Now there will be proper provision of funds that will help the civic body in the process of land acquisition,” said the officer.
