.... it is important to ensure that your skin is sun protected and you take proper care of it. Dr Amit Karkhanis, laser and cosmetic physician, tells you more about it

A day at the beach can be very relaxing for both body and soul. Just make sure you take good care of your skin while you are on the beach and once you return home. This way your skin stays smooth, healthy, and hydrated even after you have spent a long day enjoying surf and sun.

The first skin care rule on any beachside or sunny vacation is the Sunscreen. It’s probably not worth mentioning also since it’s so obvious, but unfortunately this most basic skin care priority is often taken lightly. Too much exposure to the sun can result in tanning and increase the signs of early ageing. Even short-term exposure to exotic weather conditions may cause long-lasting damage. Use a sunscreen that has a formula with a broad-spectrum SPF value of 30 or higher. Apply at least 20 minutes before stepping out. Apply it not only on the face but also on the hands and legs. Sunscreen loses its effect and must be reapplied every 2-3 hours. If you feel that you will undertake activities where there is sweating or water activities like swimming, then opt for water-resistant sunscreen.

Cover your hair and skin properly. Use a scarf preferably of a soft natural material like cotton or a wide-brimmed straw hat. This will keep you protected and stylish at the same time. Direct sunlight is very harmful for the hair and skin, especially the afternoon sun in tropical countries.

Be gentle with the lips which are often neglected till they are chapped. Use lip balm at regular intervals to keep them smooth and hydrated. Avoid long-lasting lipsticks as they dry the lips. They are just as much exposed to nature’s elements as the rest of the skin. Choose a lip balm with SPF preferably.

Don’t get lazy to follow and continue your daily skin care regime. Beauty and travel are not mutually exclusive. Even on vacation, you should not stop the routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising. It is a basic and essential requirement. Once you are back from the break, you must go for a proper skin rejuvenation treatment. Despite using these essential tips and being diligent with the use of the best sunscreen, the skin is affected. Consult your cosmetologist for a proper treatment that will give your skin the essential boost it requires.
