A tasty ‘Muramba’

The cast and director of Marathi movie Muramba share their experiences of filming it

The first thought crossing our minds while watching the trailer of Marathi movie Muramba was its title. While promoting the film at Sakal Times office last week, Varun Narvekar, who made his directorial debut with Muramba explained, “I wanted a title that had a lyrical quality to it.

Muramba, which is a sweet made of raw mango, tastes better with time. The characters and the theme have a connection with this quality of the dish — a couple married for 30 years, are completely absorbed into each other and give out a message to the younger generation through their bonding.”

Along with the director, leading actors Amey Wagh, Mithila Palkar, Sachin Khedekar, and Chinmayee Sumeet also shared their experience of shooting for the slice-of-life film which released on June 2, and has been doing well at the box-office.

Varun said that there were a couple of incidents which motivated him to write the story. “Social media has gotten us used to quick reactions — like, dislike or comment on pictures and messages. We expect the same from our relationships. We want quick results from our relations. Also, working ladies get a different kind of independence but there’s a section of men harbouring a negative image of such independent women. They have issues with women consuming alcohol or the kind of clothes they wear. There’s always a conflict. Thirdly, every generation gets a kind of freedom that the previous generation didn’t,” he explains the ideas behind the movie.

Sachin and Chinmayee, who play Amey’s parents in the film, said that they could easily connect with the story and their roles. “When you talk about slice-of-life films, they are mostly inspired from your life or experiences. In Muramba, the identification of each character and its experience is weaved beautifully,” says Sachin, adding, “It always helps when you play real characters because the process becomes easier. You don’t have to act much, remain natural and be effortless. This was possible because of the film-writing. People talk about real cinema but you have to write it beautifully.”

Mithila, who gained a lot of popularity because of the web series Girl in the City, has made her silver screen debut with the film. “I got to do something new with this character because Indu is different from the characters I play on web. She is calm and I had a lot of fun portraying her. The experience of working in a film and web is the same because acting on camera is the same across platforms,” she said.

The actors also said that they had great mutual bonding even off screen. Mithila added that the amazing camaraderie from senior actors made the process even easier and more fun. Chinmayee quickly added that she learnt to pout from Mithila, who had become their social media trainer on the set.
