What started as a tug of war between CBFC and the makers of Lipstick Under My Burkha for its release in theatre, has now become a movement on social media with celebs coming out in support of the film
Centered around the sexual fantasies and empowerment of four women, Alankrita Shrivastava’s Lipstick Under My Burkha was condemned by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for being too bold, and its release was stalled too. The film starring Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkana Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur, finally releases on July 21.
Shrivastava’s fight with the CBFC did make headlines. But what gathered unprecedented support was the social media campaign in which the lead actors posted pictures of themselves, showing their middle finger to the world and holding a lipstick behind it — just like the new poster of the film. Many other celebs and common people have also become a part of the movement by posting similar selfies, talking about the prejudices they have faced and fought, thus showing society and the regressive mindsets, a middle finger.
It all started with Ekta, the distributor of the film posting a selfie holding a lipstick and writing, “They said ‘daughters can’t take their fathers’ legacies forward. I said TAKE THAT!”. The campaign and promotional strategy for the film is called #LipstickRebellion and the Instagram page for Balaji Motion Pictures has asked women and men to recreate the post and share their selfies with them, using hashtags #lipstickundermyburkha #Lipstickrebellion.

‘SHE’ is a goddess, ‘SHE’ is a princess, ‘SHE’ has been a warrior. There is a reason why we all call her ‘MOTHER’ earth is because we survive in her womb...’SHE’ is our creator and ‘SHE’ could destroy if she wishes...there is nothing ‘SHE’ “HAS” to do and ‘SHE’ does what ‘SHE’ “WANTS” to..we have no say
