Split on the budget

Split on the budget

Whenever there’s talk about money, someone or the other is bound to be unhappy. With the announcement of this year’s budget, netizens appeared to be divided. While some thought that those having an annual income of Rs 5 lakh and below are exempt from paying taxes, others were of the opinion that the rise in taxes on fuel will bring nothing but bad news for the middle class.

No wonder that Tweeple are drowning their sorrows in sarcasm. A user posted “CA students will be very happy with this Budget as there is nothing in it for them to prepare for exams,” while another one tweeted, “We are getting new 20 rupee coin, what more do we need from the government? Stop cribbing already haters.”

Social media is filled with memes to deal with the mass disappointment. A popular joke going around is a picture with Kajol from the iconic song Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna with the lyrics ‘Yeh dil ki baat apne dil mein chupa ke rakhna’ as the answer to middle class folks saying “Is bar toh humko bumper benefits milenge.”

A fake news portal even did a satirical piece on how the government didn’t think of new benefits for the middle class because Lenskart keeps depositing Rs 2200 into their accounts on a daily basis. Fashionistas also put in their two cents, or rather, paise, about Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman ditching the briefcase for a more eco-friendly and uber stylish bahi khata.

The announcement of Pan and Aadhar card being interchangeable has also garnered a lot of creative witticism. A social media user pointed out, “After harassing citizens to link PAN and Aadhaar for almost 2 years, Govt now lets either of them to be used interchangeably. Thank you, I linked everything to Aadhaar including credit cards and now the whole world can find what undergarment I purchase!”
