A host of Bollywood celebrities have tied the knot secretly this year, surprising their fans and media

Bollywood personalities marrying secretly is surely not a new phenomenon. In the past, Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali, Dharmendra and Hema Malini, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, Minissha Lamba and Ryan Tham, Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra, John Abraham and Priya Runchal and a few others have tied the knot without the ‘shor-sharaba’ and media circus.

Mostly, such news makes headlines once in a while but 2017 has been a little extra special. This year, not one but several actors surprised their fans with the news of their wedding. Many informed the media and their fans through social media, leaving many questions unanswered.

The biggest shocker was Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s wedding that took place in a private ceremony in Tuscany, Italy on December 12. There were speculations about the couple tying the knot but none confirmed the news till they actually did it. Pictures from the wedding were also shared on social media soon after the wedding. The couple issued a statement: “Today we have promised each other to be bound in love forever. We are truly blessed to share the news with you,” which Virat and Anushka posted on their social media accounts. “This beautiful day will be made more special with the love and support of our family of fans and well-wishers. Thank you for being such an important part of our journey,” the statement read.  Followed by the wedding, the couple threw a star-studded reception in Delhi and later in Mumbai.

On December 25, another popular actress Ileana D’Cruz surprised her fans with a picture of hers with the backdrop of a Christmas tree on Instagram. But it was the caption which caught the attention of many. “My favourite time of the year ?? #christmastime #happyholidays #home #love #family Photo by hubby @andrewkneebonephotographym,” the caption read. Ileana has been dating the Australian photographer for a few years now and the actress has been open about her relationship. She has been regularly uploading pictures from their vacations spent together.

Hate Story 2 actress Surveen Chawla also announced that she is married to entrepreneur Akshay Thakker on December 27. The actress said that they had gotten married in 2015 in Italy. It was learnt that Surveen met Akshay met through a common friend in 2013 and soon after, they fell in love. “They got married in 2015, with only family and a handful of friends in attendance. It was Surveen’s dream to have a white wedding in a chapel located in a picturesque castle and Italy seemed like an apt choice,” says a source close to the actress. The actress says, “I handpicked and curated everything myself. In fact, I wanted everything to have a personal touch as it was an extremely personal affair and I was hands-on with everything.”

On keeping her wedding a secret, she says, “We wanted it to be a very low key, private and personal affair, like I always dreamt of. We kept it private for a while and were waiting for the right time to announce, which couldn’t have been more perfect than the New Year. Seeking the love and blessings of all my well-wishers and fans to celebrate the most precious day of my life with them.”

Actress Ishita Dutta tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend Vatsal Sheth in a hush-hush ceremony at the ISKCON temple in Mumbai on November 28. The couple were heard saying that they wanted a low-key wedding even though several Bollywood personalities dropped in for the wedding including Sohail Khan, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Apoorva Lakhia, Bobby Deol and so on. On keeping their wedding a secret, Vatsal says, “I don’t know about other celebrities but I always feel like keeping some privacy in my personal life.
