A series of 17 plays have been put together in a single theatrical piece, which is the debut directorial of Suyog Deshpande. He tells us more about Season X | Edition Y
Season X | Edition Y is a kaleidoscope of internal conflicts of humans, their interconnections and the darkness inside the human psyche. It puts together 17 short stories packed with over 35 vibrant characters and will be staged this evening at Sudarshan Rangmanch.
Giving us details about the play, its director Suyog Deshpande, says, “Every human being has a story that is unique from the other. But what keeps us connected are the emotions. The characters in Season X | Edition Y are in search for meaning in their lives through sexuality, death, revenge and love.”
Deshpande, who debuts with the direction of Season X | Edition Y, mentions that the idea of the play emerged from discussions with Mohit Takalkar, founder of Aasakta. He suggested the idea of compiling short plays.
After reading sessions and improvisations, 17 plays were finalised and were put together in a single theatrical piece. “The challenge with directing the short stories as a part of the play were connecting them together. All of them had different themes and yet had a similarity between them.”
Although the play has over 35 characters, the cast comprises eight people. Hrishikesh Pujari, a cast member, says, “The most challenging part as an actor was the transition of one character to another. When an actor cannot relate to his character, it is important for the former to understand his role and build the character’s story around his own personal life.”
Deshpande adds that in the fast evolving world where digitisation rules, the attention span has gradually reduced. Hence it was extremely important for them to deliver the message of the play promptly, so that the audiences do not lose any interest. “Visuals play an important role in leaving an impact so their usage has to be spot on,” he says, adding, “Our absolute insistence on innovative and exclusive production value and precision in technique makes the production visually appealing too.”
The director is also hopeful that the audience would be able to relate to at least one of the short stories.
