Safeguarding your space
TV producer Vikas Gupta, who is hosting MTV’s Ace of Space that starts from today, talks about the concept of the show and his journey behind and in front of the camera
Think of the word ‘mastermind’ and the image of Vikas Gupta pops into your mind. Known for being calculative, using his presence of mind and taking decisions with utmost care during tasks, Vikas became a household name as the Bigg Boss 11 contestant and 2nd runner up of the show. The 30-year-old, who has produced youth-based shows like Kaisi Yeh Yaariyaan, Gumrah: End of Innocence, V The Serial, MTV Fannah etc, now wears a new hat as a host on MTV India’s Ace of Space show that starts airing from tonight.
Vikas will play a mastermind, manipulating the contestants and bringing out their basic survival instinct to mark their territory. The daily show will test survival skills of the contestants, who will fight it out not to win money, hearts or love of their lives, but to win space.
“Our agenda of doing this show is to test the skills of each contestant and how they react in a given uncomfortable situation. The space they will be living in will reduce eventually on the basis of the tasks they perform,” says Vikas, who has been the youngest programming head of MTV India.
He adds that the show is about finding your space in this world. Although the contestants will be fighting for space on the show, eventually they have to discover their own space and what stuff they are made of. “The thought process is to make a fantastic successful show and for that it has to be exciting and enriching for the youth and create a situation wherein they have an experience that can change their lives,” he explains.
Vikas was the creative head of Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms for shows like Mahabharat, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil. He has also worked closely for &TV’s Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain. When asked to describe his journey as an artist, Vikas says that the changes that have come in his life have been starkly different from each other. “I’ve had varied experiences in terms of the work I’ve done so far. Earlier, I was behind the camera and then went in front of the camera for 24x7 for three months for Bigg Boss. From writing to direction, to being a participant on Bigg Boss and now becoming a host for Ace of Space — my roles have changed many times. As a host, you become the face of that show and shoulder all the responsibilities. There’s tremendous pressure. I guess I will have to work hard for it,” he adds.
When asked about the ‘mastermind’ tag, Vikas says that it all started during a task on Bigg Boss, where he used his brains, and people started teasing him ‘mastermind kahin ka.’ “I feel if you can use your mind, listen to your heart and have the right balance of both and use it in a given situation, it is not a bad thing at all. Mastermind is someone who follows his/her heart and uses his/her presence of mind, to figure out what’s right and wrong. I don’t take the tag seriously or think that it is a negative word. If you can use your brain and sort things out without getting violent or picking up a fight, then it’s a good thing to do. I apply the same in real life too,” he says.
Vikas, who is also one of the contestants in Khatron Ke Khiladi season 9, that starts from January next year, added that although he is scared of water, physical pain and cold, he did fairly well. Has he finally conquered his fears? Answers Vikas, “Not yet! The best way to overcome your fears is to learn to deal with them. There is no shortcut to overcoming your fears, it doesn’t happen overnight.”
Vikas has been getting offers to act, but he says he can’t afford to take it up full time, since he runs a production house and has employees and a team to manage and work with. “I am more passionate about writing and directing more than anything else. Acting doesn’t satisfy me as a person. I only do projects that I truly believe in and I’ve waited for five months before doing Ace for Space,” says Vikas, who has created a show for Alt Balaji.
