RUNWAY STORIES: The best of both worlds

RUNWAY STORIES: The best of both worlds

Ronak Sayyed will be showcasing her design sensibilities with Indian fabrics and Western cuts at the runway at Sakal Times Couture Weekend

If you are a fashionista, you don’t always have to wear clothes which you see on the runway. You can wear comfortable clothes and yet look fabulous. So fashion is not always about design, but also functionality. That is exactly what Ronak Sayyed, owner of Raunnakk label, wants to address. “Raunnakk is a label that attempts to design clothes which are functional as well as attractive,” says Sayyed adding that one can put their best foot forward in terms of fashion only if they are comfortable in what they are wearing.

Sayyed, who will be presenting her Indo-Western collection at the Sakal Times Couture Weekend (SCW) in the city, says that she has chosen just two shades — peach and an earthy brown — to work with. “I love colours that have a pastel feel about them, because these colours never go out of style. I have been keen on working with earthy brown for a very long time and peach is a colour that everyone likes because it suits literally everyone and it has a certain freshness to it,” says Sayyed.

She has chosen a variety of Indo-Western designs for the showcase. “We have combined Indian fabrics and embroidery with a lot of Western cuts. For example, we have teamed up a blazer with embroidered cigarette pants which is functional and can be worn with ease,” she says adding that she has worked with a range of materials and a lot of patterns which the audience will find interesting.

Sayyed believes that fashion is for everyone, no matter what age or what size. “I want to make garments that add to the confidence of any woman who sports them. She must also embrace her body shape and type. My designs promote body positivity which in recent times has become so important,” she says.

Talking about SCW, Sayyed says, “I have studied fashion in Pune and have seen the fashion industry grow tremendously in the slumber city. People are finally coming out of their comfort zone and are ready to experiment with their clothes and looks. Fashion shows like SCW are a gateway to seeing and experiencing something new with an added charm to it. Since I have been here for years, I know the type of designs that are good and workable for the Pune market.”

For a designer, selecting a showstopper is never easy, but a fashion show must have showstoppers. “Because they are the ones who present your designs to the world. They promote your clothes in a very confident manner. So I select a showstopper who is not only confident on the runway but also believes in inner beauty,” she says.
