Naturally nutritious

Food and nutrition are a necessity for humans. Fruits were intended to be close to nature, to be grown in everyone’s backyard and plucked and eaten just on time. Second Nature is an attempt to regain this, which is why we believe that everyone, young or old, who wants their fruits and vegetables to be as close to nature as possible, is our target customer,” says Dipti Motiani, founder and chief product officer at Second Nature.

To encourage you to make merry by drinking right this festive season, Second Nature brings you a range of cold extracted fruits and veggie juice blends and vegan nut milks. “We don’t use heat or any form of pasteurisation or concentrates in our products. We use a process of cold extraction which gently extracts the pulp from the fruit along with the natural soluble fibres. While this is getting done in a reduced oxygen environment to minimise oxidation, vacuum is created to remove even the dissolved oxygen to ensure a long lasting retention of natural taste, flavour and nutrients, and retain far more fibre,” says Motiani, adding, “This specialised process does not use any bags or belts which are used in the conventional cold pressing process which can be quite cumbersome to clean and maintain at a high level of hygiene. Cold Extraction allows us to retain far more fibre and avoid oxidation as compared to conventional pressing process.”

The products undergo (HPP High Pressure Processing), which is a natural, environment-friendly process that uses intense pressure —  over five times of what is found at the deepest end of the ocean —  to increase the shelf-life while respecting the ingredients and ensuring retention of the original flavour and nutrition of the fruits and veggies.

Currently, the brand has about 15 variants, each one selected from over 20 recipes tried out by a seasoned panel which continues to come up with more beneficial blends. Claiming to be a ‘clean label’, the brand uses environment friendly bottles which require lesser energy to recycle.

Pre-Christmas merriment
For all the pre-Christmas merriment, Motiani suggests juice blends. One of them is Guava Agave Chilli. It has high soluble fibre which dissolves to create a gel that may improve digestion in a number of ways, apart from reducing blood cholesterol and supporting insulin sensitivity.

Jamun Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants that help protect against skin ageing, inflammation and liver damage and reduce blood pressure, arterial stiffness, cholesterol, and boost cognitive health. Spinach Celery Orange Ginger is a good choice as a pre and post workout drink, the Phthalides in this potent herb stimulate the secretion of bile juices which reduce cholesterol levels.

Immunity boost
Come winter, you find classmates, colleagues or family members sneezing and coughing in close proximity. You need a strong immune system to fight the germs and make sure you don’t catch a cold. Motiani suggests blends like the Strawberry Banana Almond Grape. Bananas are a source of complex carbohydrates and quick energy — a great snack when you need a pick-me-up. Strawberries and grapes are a great source of vitamin C and antioxidants to pamper your skin inside out. While the vitamins aid in synthesising collagen, the antioxidants destroy free radicals that damage your skin. Rich in fibres and natural water, this smoothie is also great for your tummy, as it helps digestion and prevents a bloated stomach.

The Apple Amla blend also helps boost immunity. The alkalinity in the apple assists in cleansing the destructive toxins and waste by-products from the liver in addition to maintaining the pH levels of the body. And pectin, naturally present in an apple’s skin, promotes a healthy digestive system.

Weight watchers
Grabbing a drink which is anything apart from water, is a cautious decision for weight watchers who don’t want to put empty calories into their bodies. Motiani says, “None of our juices and nut-milks contain any added sugar. Our juices are naturally tasty as we source the best quality fruits and vegetables directly from farmers whom we have partnered with for over two decades.”

She recommends Almond Water, which is a powerhouse of nutrients. Derived from a nut, this low-calorie and low-alkaline beverage  has zero cholesterol and saturated fats and is high in omega 6 fatty acids, Almond Cocoa Dates, a lactose-free vegan smoothie loaded with vitamin E which makes the heart healthy and helps reduce the damage to the body caused by certain lifestyle excesses like smoking.
