Dr Mohit Bhatia, founder, Fuschia by Vkare, talks about the philosophy behind their skincare products and why there is a big demand for handmade items

There are about a million skincare and beauty products available in the market that promise to give you a glowing, flawless skin. But how do you know which ones are the best for you? Or what kind of chemicals are used to manufacture them?

Alarmed by people’s ignorance about daily skincare products, Dr Mohit Bhatia, along with a team of doctors, decided to enter the natural skincare market in India and hence Fuschia was born. Taking a leaf out of its parent company Vkare Bio Sciences, Fuschia has been consistently evolving and has established itself as a brand dedicated to natural, handmade skincare products. 

Talking about the ideology behind the brand and products, Bhatia says, “Having studied the never-ending market of skincare products in India and abroad we realised that most of the labels were fraught with harsh chemicals. To our surprise, the majority of customers were more or less unaware of the ingredients they were feeding their skin. However, of late, many global brands have come up with the idea of natural skincare.

Though the idea of chemical-free skincare has been widely accepted by our Indian customer base, ‘natural skincare’ still remains a blanket term for many. The existing confusion about ‘natural skincare’ has been strategically exploited by a lot of labels. Just adding the label of natural/ herbal/ ayurvedic doesn’t make it so, the ingredient list is what will decide the fact.

Looking at the scenario, we came up with the idea of ‘Fuschia’.”
The entire range is essentially free of SLS (sodium laureth sulfate), parabens, pthalates, and mineral oils. Fuschia also doesn’t test its products on animals. Some of the natural ingredients used include fruits and flowers (extracts and essential oil forms of rose, jasmine, lavender, citrus fruits, berries, etc), herbs, condiments, and essential oils. “We also use various muds like kaolin, Fuller’s earth, bentonite clay and ingredients like sandal, saffron, turmeric and other indigenous ingredients as well. Charcoal is one of our all-time favourites and our entire range of charcoal products is loved by our customers,” says Bhatia. 

Some of Fuschia’s popular products include Activated Charcoal — Face and Body Detoxifying Scrub, Day and Night Cream, Garden Lavender Day Cream with SPF 15, Peppermint Pedicure Nourishing Foot Cream, Arabian Jasmin Anti-ageing Cream, Cherry Red Lip Balm, Rose and Calamine Face Mask and Activated Charcoal Detox Face Mask.

Telling us what makes Fuschia different from other brands, Bhatia says that its wide range and the variety of variants in each product, make it stand out. “Besides, the manufacturing process is handmade. The production batches are small and this also ensures that the products reach customers in their freshest form. At the same time, we also contribute towards saving the ecosystem from harsh chemicals. As far as quality control is concerned, each batch that is manufactured goes under strict quality monitoring of the formulator himself/ herself and random samples from each batch are inspected for quality adherence,” he explains.

When asked how handmade skincare products are better than the others, Bhatia says that handmade as a concept is not new. “Not only it ensures the quality while manufacturing but the amount of titration possible during the manufacturing process makes the final product more desirable. The best part is the employment opportunities it generates, so you are able to contribute to the community as well,” he adds.

Currently, a self-funded organisation, Fuschia works along with a network of 100+ e-commerce portals. Among the distribution channels, it has collaborated with subscription boxes and retail stores.
