With Warner Bros’ new treat for Potterheads — the mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery —   diehard fans tell us what it’s like to have the world of Hogwarts at their fingertips

Potterheads are ‘weird’ souls. Their thirst and hunger to live in the magical world never ends. And that is the reason why even 11 years after the last book (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was launched) and 8 years after the last film (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was released), fans still continue to dwell in the fantastical world created by JK Rowling.

Warner Bros too understands this, which is why it came up with the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The mystery of Grindelwald will once again unfold with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald scheduled for release later this year. Warner Bros has also launched the most anticipated wizarding game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, available worldwide on App Stores and Google Play. A double treat for Harry Potter fans. Isn’t it?

The game lets you revisit Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the fictional school in the Harry Potter series which produced great wizards like Prof Albus Dumbledore, Prof Severus Snape, Prof Minerva McGonagall, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and of course, Harry Potter, among others. The game is set at Hogwarts campus but in a different time period which is before the events in the first book.

While you won’t get to see or meet Harry, Hermione or Ron, you’ll surely enjoy being one of students at Hogwarts who gets to choose his own house, attend classes, purchase stationery from the Diagon Alley and be a part of a plethora of other exciting activities.

Darshi Shah, a media professional from Ahmedabad, who has grown up reading Harry Potter books, finds this game a huge thing, says, “I wanted this to happen from a very long time.” She recalls joking with her fellow Harry Potter fans that she would have a difficult time concentrating on her work if the game hit the market. Talking about her gaming experience, she says that the best part is the graphics.

Aditi Paul, from Kolkata says, “Since the day Pokemon Go was announced and released in India, I hoped that Harry Potter some day would get a game.” Now that it’s here, she’s thrilled. Paul has followed the official Harry Potter website — Pottermore — very closely, be it getting sorted in houses, or finding the perfect wand, she believes the entire existence of the website makes her life a happy one. She says, “Even though it has been several years since the books were published, the website is rather a resourceful one with in depth explanation of characters and also some of the famous places in the books and movies.”

They both agree that the story on which the game is based is an interesting one. Giving us an insight into the game, Shah says the story is about the character’s (which is played by you) brother who goes missing. She adds that the game is based way before Harry Potter begins his wizarding schooling at Hogwarts. “Which means that all your favourite characters who were killed off are now alive in the game,” Paul quips.

However, Indore-based Juhie Bhardwaj, who has always enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series, says that though she was waiting for this game for a long time, it however hasn’t lived up to her expectations. “The graphics are great and so is the story line but a few of the things are just not right,” she says.

Bhardwaj points out that during the sorting ceremony in the game, the individual is given a choice to choose his or her desired house. “Which in the books or according to the original story line is not right,” she adds. In the books and films, it is the talking Sorting Hat that appoints you a house. She says that even though the game is addictive what puts her off is that the energy required to complete a task gets over quickly.
That said, the game has been a huge hit with Potterheads. “So what if you didn’t receive your Hogwarts letter, Warner Bros, along with Portkey Games and Jam City, have actually made the Harry Potter world available to all their fans at their fingertips,” Bhardwaj adds.

All of them agree that the game is an interesting one, no matter how old you are. If you were once a Potterhead you’ll always be one.
Well that’s not all. There is also news that the next big thing to happen for all diehard Harry Potter fans is that there is probably going to be Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, an AR (augmented reality) game from Pokemon Go developers Niantic Labs, which for sure is going to be a big hit and create a buzz among the fans once again. Till then ‘mischief managed’!
