Ed Sheraan breaks a personal record, talks about his attachment with his guitar and sings some of the best songs he’s written on James Corden’s latest Carpool Karaoke session.
Guess who James Corden invited on a drive recently? Ed Sheeran and his guitar! Starting the drive by listening, and singing along to the artist’s chart-topping track Shape of You, Ed was seen urging on James to grind to the tune. He even felt up James’ thigh jokingly.
He talks about how he did three months of “proper travelling” and then worked on the album for eight months. James claims he doesn’t have a phone anymore. “I actually had a phone for, like, two weeks. And then I just didn’t charge it. It’s just what it would have been like 30 years ago, for my parents. I wake up in the morning and there used to be, like, 50 messages, and none of them would say ‘Hey, how are you?’ They’d be like, ‘Can I have this?’, ‘Can you lend me this?’, ‘Can you do this?’, and it was fine at the beginning. It just got draining at the end of it. So getting rid of that, going travelling, getting some perspective, making an album that I love, everything’s great!,” said Ed.
They went on to sing, and slayed the rap and high-fived at the success. James challenged Ed to beat the artist’s personal best record of stuffing 47 Maltesers in his mouth at once, and it was accepted. Not only did he win the challenge, but he also upped his score by stuffing 55 pieces of chocolate in his mouth.
It was a delight to see him perform an impromptu rendition of Thinking Out Loud with his guitar.
And did you know that Ed loves drinking at a dive bar or a swanky pub? And what he likes even more is taking along people who don’t visit these places. His latest tag-along was Justin Bieber. I was in Tokyo the other day and Beiber was there. Just him, no security or anything, and he came to this filthy dive bar. “Oh God! And we ended up at this golf course and he put a golf ball in his mouth and said, ‘Go on! Hit it out!’ and I was pretty hammered and I was like ‘Focus! Focus! Focus! You can’t hit him!’ And I had this driver wedge and I cracked him across the face and I was like ‘Oh no!,”said Ed. In horror, when James asked him if JB was alright, he said, “He was actually quite cool about it. He was like, ‘Oh bro! Oh!’ and just carried on,” said Ed.
He also sang the song he wrote for Bieber, Love Yourself, and the track he wrote for One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful. Talking about how he and his guitar are inseperable, he says, “As a person I can have conversations, but musically when you stand me there in front of the microphone, I get awkward. I’ve been glued to this guitar since I was 11 years old and it’s just been a way that if I ever feel awkward I bring it out,” said Ed, jokingly adding, “I was quite an unfortunate looking kid. God looked down at me and was like, ‘You need help getting laid mate’.”Together, James and Ed, made a ‘stuck in traffic’ version of Castle on the Hill too.
