'I have become calm'
Actor Abeer Soofi talks about the responsibility of playing the title role of Sai Baba in Mere Sai
To mark the 100 years of Sai Baba taking samadhi in Shirdi this year, Sony TV is launching a daily series on the saint’s life titled Mere Sai. The show will go on air today (September 25) at 7.30 pm. While Abeer Soofi is playing the role of Sai Baba, Toral Rasputra is playing Baija Maa, Vaibhav Mangle as Kulkarni Sarkar, Abhishek Nigam as young Sai Baba, Chirag Dave as Mhalsapati and Hemant Thatte as Appa Kote Patil.
The show is being produced by Dashami Creations and the actor says that Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust has helped the creative team by actively researching on his life.
Says Abeer, “Last year, I had visited the Shirdi Sai Baba temple but couldn’t get a darshan as it was very crowded. I prayed from outside and told Sai Baba, ‘I can’t meet you because of the crowd so next time please call me as a celebrity.’ And within a year, I am playing his character though I believe that there’s no bigger celebrity than Sai Baba himself.”
Abeer says that show will follow Sai Baba’s journey from young age to old age and till he took samadhi. “We will also share his teachings but make him more approachable. There’s a kind of simplicity in his teaching which more people should know,” he says.
The actor admits that playing the character is a huge responsibility. “That’s because people believe in him’. I experience a wide range of emotions while portraying him. He lives within the people,” says Abeer.
He adds that playing the saint has been spiritually uplifting for him. “I have changed since I started working in the show. I have become calm and think before I speak. I calmly greet people when I meet them now. I have started to meditate too,” says Abeer.
The actor says that his mother, who is a big devotee of Sai Baba, is happy that he has signed the show. “She says that Sai Baba made it possible,” Abeer says before signing off.
