Gurdeep Kohli Punj talks about her role in Prithvi Vallabh, how she wants to play strong characters, and why she doesn’t mind playing the role of a mother
Gurdeep Kohli Punj will play a special role in Sony TV’s upcoming magnum opus Prithvi Vallabh. The talented actress says that though she plays a small part in the show, it’s nevertheless a substantial one. “In spite of it being a small role, I decided to take it because I had seen the promos playing for some time now. There’s a lot of buzz about the project,” says the actress.
The show which is going on air from January 20, stars Ashish Sharma, Sonarika Bhadoria, Pawan Chopra, Shalini Kapoor, Alefia Kapadia and others.
Gurdeep says that Prithvi Vallabh is a show that relives our lost history. “This is a story of a girl Mrinal standing up for her brother against Prithvi Vallabh. I am playing Mrinal’s mother. It’s a beautiful story. The values Mrinal imbibes from her parents who passed away, help her move ahead in life. As a kid, Mrinal watched her mother die. She is really affected by the death of her parents and wants to take revenge on those who were responsible for that.”
Gurdeep says that playing a historical character is quite challenging because it’s very different from real life. “But I really enjoy it. Whenever I play such a character, it takes me back to my school days when I used to participate in dramatics. The costume and dialogues are lot of fun.”
And what kind of research went into playing the character? The actress replies, “The best part of mythological or historical shows is that an actor does not need to do much. We just need to follow the script because the channel and production team do all the research. In fact, we learn a lot while shooting because most of us tend to forget history as we grow up. That’s the case with Prithvi Vallabh too — no one remembers this part of our history. But it’s a great story, so why not share it with the world? It’s great to be part of a show which is backed by the channel.”
Gurdeep was last seen playing a strong character in Sethji, which aired on Zee TV. She says that her focus is on playing similar characters. “After Sethji, I was looking to play a strong character. The fact is that I love acting. Even when I was on sabbatical, I was itching to work. I am one of the most hungry actors. I like playing larger-than-life roles because the whole dramatics gets etched in your mind. I took it like a challenge,” she says.
She adds that while playing Sethji, the language was a challenge because she had to speak pure Hindi. “I did not want to fumble. It was a different issue that the show did not work but I am looking forward to playing more such characters. I don’t mind playing a mother because I’ve done a similar role much before Sethji. But I want to play a character who contributes to the show. She should not be someone who gives birth to the hero or heroine and then the story revolves around them,” Gurdeep says, adding that she has been refusing a lot of shows. “When I ask them what’s the mother’s role and they look confused, I immediately know that I shouldn’t pursue it,” she concludes.
