Eminent Hindustani classical vocalist of the Mewati gharana, Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar from Pune has been chosen for the prestigious Gaan-Saraswati award for 2018. This award was instituted in the memory of late Kishori Amonkar, by her senior most disciple Dr Arun Dravid. It carries a purse of Rs One lakh and a scroll of honour, read the press release issued by the award committee.
The award is conferred each year upon accomplished Hindustani classical vocalist, below the age of 50. Eminent vocalist Manjiri Asanare was the recipient of the first Gaan-Saraswati award last year. The award will be presented to Abhyankar on January 6, at Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre, Mumbai.
Pt Abhyankar is a senior disciple of the leading vocalist Padma Vibhushan Pt Jasraj. Pt Abhyankar is an artist of international acclaim in the field of Hindustani classical and devotional music. He is an iconic singer of his generation.
Blessed with an exceptionally sweet voice, his vocation in life was clear right from the age of three. Born on October 5, 1969, Abhyankar started learning Hindustani classical music, from the age of eight. His mother, Dr Smt Shobha Abhyankar and Pt Pimpalkhareji of the Gwalior gharana also groomed him.
In 1981, he had his first stage performance in Mumbai, at the age of 11. Since then, he has traveled extensively all over the country performing at all the prestigious conferences and art circles, several times. He has a distinction of performing in over 200 different cities till date. Abhyankar has recited Dasbodh containing 7,800 verses for an audio book project by the Maharashtra government.
