Forty shades of BEAUTY
“That was really important, for me, for every product. I kept saying, ‘There needs to be something for a dark-skinned girl, there needs to be something for a pale girl, there needs to be something for everyone in between.’’
Celebrating diversity, pop star Rihanna has launched 40 foundation shades for a multitude of skin tones, which is making women really happy. Here are some reactions
Rihanna never fails to inspire us! Be it the amazing songs she belts out or her out-of-the box style statement, or the way she empowers women, the This Is What You Came For singer shatters many stereotypes. Recently, RiRi took a step forward by launching 40 foundation shades to embrace women of all colours. When she launched her brand Fenty Beauty itself she wrote on its website, “For women of all shades, personalities, attitudes, cultures, and races, I wanted everyone to feel included.”
The 40 shades of foundations include the fairest of skin tones to neutral light, browns and even darker tones like tan warm, deep cool, deep neutral and so on. There’s something for every woman. Even the models who feature in the promo video go from very fair to dark and that redefines the standard of beauty as perceived around the world.
The moment the Only Girl singer revealed to the world about the revolutionary makeup product through a tweet, “You knoooowwww it!!!!! Gotta represent for my girls and we come in all shades! Especially my brown sisters... been left out too many times in the makeup world!” the world went gaga over the news.
Makeup artists, beauty bloggers and even regular women, who have struggled to find the perfect shade of foundation matching their skin tone for ages, have applauded her for the creation. With the rave reviews that the product has received on social media, it seems that the makeup industry will soon embrace diversity just as RiRi does.
Karishma Mansata, makeup artist who owns Lane Six, Salon in Koregaon Park, hasn’t yet used Rihanna’s new line of foundations but she thinks it is absolutely amazing simply because of the variety of shades that have been made available to suit all skin shades and colours. “It is potently complexion focussed, and considering the present times, it looks as though we now have something for everybody and intermediate shades as well. Foundation being the most important part of a girl’s makeup, it’s ground-breaking to have something that suits pretty much every skin tone. Rihanna herself is a global, diverse phenomenon and I think her makeup line represents just that,” she says.
Suzanne Mascarenhas of Maria’s Hairdressing and Beauty Salon, located in Viman Nagar, Wanowrie and Kalyani Nagar, can’t stop raving about RiRi’s pathbreaking creation. “Rihanna’s new line of foundation is an absolutely wise and brilliant step towards imparting gorgeous skin tone! It is so wise to offer a diverse variety in foundations along with a primer. More often than not, people tend to focus a lot on the eyes but forget about the skin. Skin plays the most important factor in any makeup regime and the perfect foundation suitable for any skin tone was exactly what was required! Rihanna sure is a revolutionary genius, besides being exceptionally beautiful,” says Mascarenhas.
The foundation has been a hit among bloggers too. Says beauty blogger Sania Sakhuja, “My sister has a dark skin tone and for the last 10 years, she has been struggling to find a shade that suits her skin colour. But since the industry is obsessed with fair skin, you hardly find the right shade. I am so glad at least someone thought about this. This is just the beginning, hope to see more such ground-breaking ideas.”
For HR professional Rujuta Mehta, who has been bullied for her dark skin since childhood, RiRi is nothing less than an angel in disguise. “It is not just in India, skin colour is a global issue. It is endearing to see how a celebrity thought of an issue that almost all individuals face in their lives. I think the idea stemmed from RiRi’s own strife to fight discrimination based on colour. Now, I love her more than I did in the past. More and more celebs should come up with such campaigns. I am really happy,” says Mehta.
