Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald: Who is Credence? (Reviews)

This sequel to the prequel to the Harry Potter series will divide audiences. While Potterheads will be left thrilled, those not a part of the fandom might not share the same sentiments. The film kicks off from where the previous one ended — Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) is in custody of MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), and is being transferred to Europe to be held accountable for his crimes there. But he escapes and lands up in Paris to gather his followers and start a revolution for pure bloods to rule over the muggles/ no-majs. He searches for Credence (Ezra Miller), who we thought had died in the climax of the previous film but apparently has survived and is in desperate search of his family.

The handsome (and a lot younger) version of Albus Dumbledore shows up in London to pursue one of his favourite ex-students Newt Scamander to hunt Grindelwald and stop him before he gets to Credence. We also get to see the pretty Scamander, Newt’s brother Theseus (Callum Turner), who is an auror at the Ministry of Magic, trying to get Newt to take up a job in his department and help defeat the dark wizard. There are a number of romantic subplots which are left loose-ended. But the ultimate question which has everyone on a mission is —who is Credence? And it is worth the grand reveal.

Considering that Grindelwald was Voldemort’s role model, it can only be said that Depp fails to send chills down spines of the audience. Villains, especially legendary ones like Grindelwald who was said to be as powerful as Dumbledore, need to make your skin crawl with the way they speak. But it seems that even with full facial features (a nose and everything!) Depp’s rather disappointing frigid performance is quite forgettable. Anyone could have done this role if the bar was set so low, even Katrina Kaif!

Newt is as awkward as before, and his no-maj friend Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) is as clueless as before. But while Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) is nursing her broken heart due to some misconception by pursuing Credence herself in Paris, her sister Queenie (Alison Sudol) treads down a dark path.

Initially, there’s a lot of excitement around Nagini (Claudia Kim), who is known to eventually become Lord Voldemort’s pet and horcrux in the Harry Potter series. At this time, she is shown as a sensible girl with a blood curse which will leave her trapped in a snake’s body forever, and a close friend of Credence. There are a number of cameos, including a fan-favourite teacher and a certain immortal, that will leave you nostalgically grinning from ear to ear.

Coming to the fantastic beasts, we are introduced to the fierce Zouwu — a mix between a lion and a Chinese dragon-like with adorable eyes. But the Niffler is the one who literally steals the show.
