Dandiya top tracks
Dandiya or garba celebration is incomplete without the perfect music. City-based musicians and DJs tell us what numbers are popular this year
Vibrant colours, gleeful faces, the bonhomie and togetherness, and merrymaking while playing dandiya and garba are simply marvellous. But for the energetic dance steps, the right music is extremely important.
In the past during dandiya and garba, people usually danced to traditional folk music, however, over the years, Bollywood numbers and remixes have become popular. DJs playing heart-thumping and foot-tapping music have also become a rage. We speak to a few DJs to know what are the most popular dandiya/ garba tracks this year.
Old is gold
DJ Rohen Antonny, who playes hip-hop, moombahton, Bollywood, commercial house, future house, Punjabi and trap, says that while Bollywood remains the obvious choice, people mostly go by the songs in the movies which already have garba theme in them and some of them still remain classic dandiya tracks.
“Nagada Sang Dhol from the movie Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela is one of the top tracks even today. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’s Dholi Taro Dhol Baje has been a favourite for years. Other tracks like Udi Udi Jaye from Raees, Kai Po Che’s Shubhaarambh, Radha Kaise Na Jale from Lagaan, Lahu Munh Lag Gaya and Bhai Bhai from Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela are also very popular. When mixed with energetic beats, classics like Falguni Phatak’s Maine Payal Hai Chhankai, Suneeta Rao’s Paree Hoon Main and Thakshak’s iconic number Mujhe Rang De also appeal to the crowds and they love swaying to the beats,” informs Antonny.
The city-based DJ further adds that there are also requests for Bollywood songs which do not feature garba and dandiya sequences but keep the energy flowing. So he mixes a few latest hits like Kala Chashma (Baar Baar Dekho), Twist Kamaraiya (Bareilly Ki Barfi), Chalti Hai Kya Nau Se Barah (Judwaa 2) and others so that the music doesn’t get monotonous.
Ask Antonny if English numbers are also popular at dandiya nights and he says, “By mixing popular songs like Despacito and Shape of You into bhangra mix, I give the international songs a local feel. It is refreshing to see the crowd ready to scorch the dance floor when these songs are played and youngsters totally love them. In case, I am playing a soft Hindi number, I use the mic to interact with the crowd and cheer them up!”
City-based musician and disc jockey Avneet Sawhney, who is known as DJ Sonu and a popular name in the music circuit in Pune, says that people instantly connect with Bollywood numbers, hence at most dandiya and garba programmes, he plays dandiya numbers and remixes them with popular Bollywood tracks.
“We have remixed the popular tracks with dandiya beats to suit the festivities and the mood,” says Sonu. He shares his top 10 tracks that he is playing this Navratri. Each of the numbers has been remixed and created by the DJ along with another musician DJ Shadab:
