Cloth gives comfort

Cloth gives comfort

Having a baby changes your life overnight. You start hunting for a baby cot, clothes, top feed products and most importantly diapers. No matter which country you belong to, as soon as you walk into a supermarket you are spoilt for choice by the number of disposable diapers that are available. Sure these diapers are super convenient but they have an effect not only on your baby’s skin but also on the environment since it takes years and years for them to degrade.

So isn’t it time to switch over to eco-friendly diapers? Using such products is becoming more and more important today as they promote green living and help to conserve energy and prevent air, water or land pollution. Mumbai-based Pallavi Utagi, mother to a five-year-old kid strongly feels that it is high time we aggressively brought a change by introducing such simple eco-friendly products.

Utagi left her corporate job and started Superbottoms that brings into market sustainable and reusable cloth diapers for babies. When asked how she came up with the idea, Utagi replies, “My boy suffered from diaper rashes. I tried every possible thing and then realised that my baby would be safe and happy if we just used good quality cloth diapers.” Another reason for the switch was that disposable diapers account for millions of tonnes of waste to landfills each year, resulting into leakage of pathogens into the water supply. Research studies have shown that diapers in landfills take up to 500 years to degrade, creating methane and other toxic gasses in the process. Parents, who are more health and eco-conscious, can therefore opt for reusable cloth diapers. In addition, families can save about $900 per year.”

The entrepreneur also mentions that every baby uses about 3000-5000 diapers in his/her entire diapering journey. But if the parents make a switch to advanced cloth diapers, they would need just about 10-12 diapers in the baby’s diapering journey.

Talking about the cloth diapers that Superbottoms makes, Utagi says that they all are 100 per cent washable and reusable cloth diapers. “These diapers contain three parts — an outer shell made of PUL which is water proof and leak proof, a soaker which is made of multiple layers of 100 per cent organic cotton, which does the job of absorbency and a top dry feel layer on the soaker, which gives the feeling of dryness to the baby. The Superbottoms Advanced Cloth Diapers are made of GOTS certified organic cotton and are free of harmful chemicals like phalates which make the diapers safe to use,” she infoms.

What makes Superbottoms special, rather different, is the fact that it is run by mothers. “As mothers, we know what babies need and how we can cater to their needs in a safe manner. As women and mothers, our team brings a newer perspective to the brand. Convincing new age parents to use something like a cloth diaper can be difficult, but when they are made aware of the benefits of it not only for their baby but also for the environment, they do tend to listen,” she adds.

Clearning misconceptions about using cloth diapers, Utagi says, “Many people wrongly believe that using cloth diapers will give their babies rashes. In fact, cloth diapers reduce the chance of rashes significantly. They are baby skin friendly. A parent just needs to monitor and change the diapers from time to time.”

The cloth diapers from Superbottoms are available on their website and on Amazon.
