Being safe on TikTok

Being safe on TikTok

With more and more youngsters in India taking a liking for the 15-second video recording platform TikTok, the app makes sure to optimise its performance by adding features to it and making it an enjoyable experience for its users.

At India’s first-ever TikTok Creator’s Lab held in Mumbai recently, we caught up with some leading creators to find out how you can make use of all the videos and safety features on the app to ensure your videos are a wholesome entertainment package.

Nagma Mirajkar, who is a popular style guru on TikTok, believes that what makes her videos watchable other than the content is the use of different in-built features that enhances the video quality. “Making a video on TikTok is quite simple, all you have to do is open the app and click on the plus sign to start recording and depending on what type of video you are recording, you can add a suitable song or track to make the video even more entertaining,” says Mirajkar.

Talking about the app features, Mirajkar says that if you want to create a flawless video along with sound, you must really slow it down using the slow-motion feature. “Many a time, the music or the track is super fast and sometimes you cannot cope up with the speed. If you slow it down, it becomes manageable,” she adds.

Another interesting video feature according to her, is the Duet one, where two different app users can create and collaborate on making a single video. “It not only looks magical but is also very interactive. So you can interact with fans and create videos with them as well,” she points out.

While making videos with the inbuilt features on the app is super easy and user-friendly, Awez Darbar, a dancer from Mumbai says that what he enjoys the most on the app is the fact that the security features are really wonderful. “We are aware of the language,  trolls and graphic comments that are widely present on the platforms. The safety features which TikTok has issued, surely come to the rescue in such cases,” says Darbar.

According to him, in the security and safety section of the app, you can actually control who can see or share the content that is being posted online. “You can freely share your content and keep it safe by only sharing it with people you know and trust,” he adds.

Another feature that sets the app apart is the one where you can filter comments that have certain words in it. “For example, if I do not want to see a particular word in my comments — say, for instance, unicorn, I can simply feed it in the privacy setting and all the comments that contain this particular word will no more be visible to me.” This is a good way of dealing with harsh comments or trolls since no one will interact with them, no one will feed them attention and so, in the long run, they will stop with their abusive slurs targeted towards the creator,” he says.

However, both Mirajkar and Darbar agree that no matter which social platform or app you are using, you must take out time to sit and read their privacy terms and conditions and also accept followers and friends only if you know them. “People should not be afraid to report spam and profiles that do not follow the community guidelines,” says Mirajkar.

Device Management feature is an addition to TikTok’s existing suite of 13 industry leading safety features, which are designed to protect Indian users. Features like age gate, restricted mode, screen time management, comments filter and safety centre are helping users to safely showcase their creative expression.

Furthermore, as part of ongoing education for users, TikTok has released a series of educational videos in Hindi and English to help users understand and learn the workings of 14 safety features. The video is curated to be fun and easy to understand for Indian users.

TikTok will continue to launch new tools and initiatives to support the creation of a positive and safe app environment.
